Howells Journal-Thursday 25, 1969 LAST RITES FOR ARTIST, ANNA BERAN Funeral service for a Howells native and accomplished artist, Mrs Joseph(Anna M.) Beran, 78 of Omaha was held Dec 20, at the Kremer Funeral Home. Interment was in Behemian National Cemetery in Omaha. Mrs Beran was in failing health for some time. Anna Karnik, one of seven children of Charles and Marie Kalisek Karnik, was born in Howells. Her education was received in Howells schools and she grew to young woman hood here. Since her marriage to Joseph Beran the couple resided in Omaha. In about 1940, Mrs Beran donated her prize winning painting, "Nebraska Mural", to the Howells community to be hung in the High School Auditorium. The scenic painting depicted the progress of Nebraska from the time of the Indians. A public dinner banquent, sponsored by the Howells Community Club, honored the artist during the formal presentation. Mrs Beran was generous with her talent, frequently giving as gifts to Howells friends had painted pictures or other items. She was also a guest speaker and displayed her artistry at a Howells Woman's Club meeting a number of years ago. Mrs Beran was a member of the North Omaha Woman's Club and the Associated Artists of Omaha. Survivors include her husband Joseph J. whose residence address is 3921 N. 21st, Omaha, four sisters: Mrs Mary Arnold, Mrs Rose Loukota, and Sister M. Emmanuela de N.D. (Bess)a former area teacher and now retired at the Convent de Notre Dame, all of Omaha, and Mrs Fred (Mildred) Higgins, Pleasand Hill, California, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was precedded in death by her parentsl two brothers, Emil Karnik and Joseph Karnik; and a step-father, Matej Zacek.
