The Greeley Citizen, Greeley, Nebraska · Friday, October 20, 1905 pg 9 My Son James CHAPERT V. Last week's CITIZEN told of how "My son James" had "held up" as county judge fees belonging to his office, for four years (and not yet paid). Now we have another case, and this time it is as clerk of the district court. August 19, 1904, this paper began the publication of a sale notice, by Kate L. Jeffres, administratrix of the the estate of George W. Jeffres, deceased, wherein notice of the sale was given of the property occupied by the livery barn. The sale date was September 12, 1904. We are informed by T. J. Howard, as attorney for the estate, that the property was sold and the cost paid into court a long time ago - which means that "My son James," is "holding up" our publication fee in this case also. If "My son James" can show that this statement is wrong we will let him tell our readers so through the columns of this paper. And from from what we hear talked, the CITIZEN is not alone in this "hold up" business. "My son James", by not immediately paying over costs that come into his hands creates a breach of trust that may make trouble for himself and bondsmen in the future, and it may be also the means of causing much litigation by people who do not receive their fees. Is "My son James" qualified for the important position of county clerk? Will his records bear investigation? The law provides that personal taxes may be paid any time after October 1, in the year in which they have been assessed, but they do not draw interest until the 1st of December. Has the county clerk of Greeley county turned over to the treasurer for collection the tax books? Not he? He has time to canvass for votes, but none to do the work for which the county pays him. And the books were delayed last year about two weeks. And he is just so in all his work - dilatory at all times.
