A message received by relatives here and at Horace Tesuday(sic) stated briefly the death of Vera Jeffres in an auto accident in Iowa where she was spending her Christmas vacation. From the daily papers of the state and later report it appears that Miss Jeffres had been attending Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa and gone to Randolph where she was a guest of relatives and where too, her mother, Mrs. Applegate of Horace, and brother Clinton were also visiting. Christmas night, in company with a cousin, Arthur Clark of Randolph, Miss Jeffres left by auto for a dance at Glenwood, Iowa and as they reached the Nishnabona(sic) river bridge the car evidently went wrong and failed to make a bad turn plunging headlong into the the river below, pining the occupants beneath it. A passerby noticed the tail light of the car just protruding out of the water and immediately procured assistance. Rather than pull the car out take chances of the bodies becoming free and floating down stream a portion of the car was torn away and the bodies removed in that matter. It was a terrible shock to the relatives and many friends both here and in Iowa. Vera Jeffres was Twenty-three years of age and the daughter of Mrs. E. Applegate and _______ mother, is survived by two two brothers and one sister, all of whom live or near Horace. Elmer Jeffres, Mrs. Edward Hurley and Clinton Jeffres. Her father died several years ago. The body was brought to Horace Wednesday and the funeral services is being conducted this afternoon with interment made in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia where her father was buried. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of all in their grief. The Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa · Saturday, December 30, 1922 pg 7 Fiance Returns to Attend Funeral of His Intended Bride (Associated Press Leased Wire.) Randolph, Ia., Dec. 29 - Conway Rhyne of St. Louis came to Randolph Thursday to take the body of his fiancee, Miss Vera Jefferies,(sic) who was killed in an auto accident Christmas, to her parents' home in Howard, Neb., where her funeral will be held Sunday. Miss Jefferies(sic) and Mr. Rhyne expected to marry within a few weeks and intended to go into foreign mission work for the Baptist church. In the girl's purse, when her body was taken from the waters of the Nisnabotna river, in which she was drowned, was a letter, sealed and stamped, ready to be mailed to Rhyne confirming the arrangements for their wedding. Miss Flora McSwain of Des Moines, roommate of Miss Jefferies(sic) at Swea City, where both were teaching, accompanied the funeral party to Nebraska. Six younger men who had been close friends of Oscar Clark , who was killed at the time Miss Jefferies(sic) lost her life, were pallbearers at his funeral here. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Clark, wealthy retired farm people. He was driving the car which plunged over the bank into the river, both occupants being drowned.
