Bio

Covey, Sr. Fred Sanford Covey, Sr, 79, died Wednesday March 2, 2005. Funeral service was at 2:00 pm Friday March 4, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev Charles Addington, pastor officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Rodney Kane, Larry Kane, Steve Kane, Leigh Carter. Albert Motsenbocker, and Randy Motsenbocker. He was born November 16, 1925 in the Arlie Community of Childress County to Rubin Avril Covey and Delia Pearl Collins Covey. He attended school at Arlie, Dodsonville and Wellington where he lettered in football for three years. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1944 and was a Waist Gunner/Togglier on a B17 bomber plane. He served as a Sergeant flying in 6 missions, in the 412th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bomb Group (H), 8th Air Force while stationed in England. On August 23, 1945, Fred married Ima Odessa Camp in Wellington. They were married for 59 years. Fred was a Christian and a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was an active member of the Carter Sunday School Class, and also served on the Board of Trustees and the Official Board of the church. He also served as chairman of the board of Tri-County Coop Gin. Fred loved farming and history (especially history about W W II and airplanes), and his hobby was fishing. He was known for being a kind, sensitive, gentle spirited, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, James Covey. He is survived by his wife Odessa Covey of Wellington, one son Fred Sanford Covey, Jr. and wife Sha of Wellington, two daughters Leslie Moore of Lubbock and Kelly Cummings and husband Mike of Wellington, one sister Lucille Motsenbocker of Wellington, three brothers Winford Covey of Sweetwater, R A (Peck) Covey of Amarillo and Bobby Jack Covey of Torrence, CA, several nieces, and nephews, 9 grandchildren, and 8 greatgrandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Wellington Cemetery Association or the First United Methodist Church. The Wellington Leader Thursday, March 3, 2005
