Bio
Full name was Joel Hudson Simpkins. All his life he went by "Joe." Some of the family have suggested that his middle name was supposed to have been the last name of his maternal grandparents; Huddleston, but that an error in recording listed him as Joel Hudson. His mother's father was Joel Huddleston. Virtually all of Joe's working years were spent in various capacities in the oil fields; from general labor to pumper. He was a popular worker, and enjoyed spending some of his off hours playing baseball on the company sand-lot team. In the last year or so of Joe's life, he was severely crippled with arthritis. The pain and fever were considered essentially the cause of death. About the only medication available in those days was aspirin, which Joe consumed freely. One source even attributes his death, at least in part, to an overdose of aspirin. He was only 42 years old at the time of his death, and left his widow, Effie and six children: Troy Lee, Austin Lynn, Thomas Thelbert, Joe Clifford, Dorothy and Dale.
