Infant Simpkins never had a chance to experience life. In early 1908, Martin Simpkins returned from a train trip very ill with measles. Some history suggests there was also an epidemic of flu/pneumonia in the area at the same time. The entire family of wife Mary and eight children of ages ranging from 17 down to 2 were soon infected as well. Mary was about 8 months pregnant with this little girl baby, and by the time she was born on January 28th, she was already infected, and mother and infant both died two days later, on January 30th. It is likely the combination of these diseases all befell the family. No official records heralded this baby's birth, and whether a name was actually given to the baby is not known, but some family tradition suggests she was named Rosie. One source thought the name was Ruby. The loving decision was made to place the two day-old infant in the same casket as her mother Mary, so there were no photos taken, nor was there a separate grave. How God impresses family to acquire such enormous love for an infant only two days old is one of His mighty marvels. But so it is with this tiny baby, so soon called to dwell forever in the presence of God and his angels. Held in death in the loving arms of her mother, she will ever be thought of with love and devotion.
