Bio

Berl Simpkins was born in Lamar, Alabama in 1893; the third child, second son of Martin and Mary Simpkins. In about 1901 the family moved to Montague County, Texas, to farm 160 acres of land. In 1908, when Berl was 14, his father and mother both died due to "complications of measles." He was third from oldest of eight children, and his older sister became head of the household, and he and older brother Joe were the farmers. After a few years, the family began to spread out, and Berl, often called "Ceese" as a nickname, eventually worked in the oil fields, as well as doing "share-crop" farming. In 1927 he married Frona Johnson, and over the years they produced seven children; moving from Texas to California during the years of World War II. He worked in shipyards there as a welder until his physical condition dictated he could no longer work. He was a "stay-at-home" dad and was greatly loved and respected by his children, family and friends alike. Berl Simpkins was a model of honesty and morality, and will be sorely missed.
