As a child, and even into his adult years, Walt Simpkins was called Buster. The origin of that is not known, but the family may have been familiar with the popular comic strip called Buster Brown, about a mischievous but likeable little boy by that name. Walt was never sure of his exact date of birth, but census reports credibly establish the year as 1904, and the day and month are derived with pretty good confidence from family records. In his late teens and into adulthood he worked in various capacities in the Texas oil fields, progressing to owning a gas station in Nocona, then reportedly selling insurance, and finally as a letter carrier for the U S Postal Service, from which he retired. Walt loved to visit family, and over the years would drive long distances to attend a reunion. He was full of humor and was a master at spinning stories and tales. He and Faye had three boys; Bobby Ray, James Bryan and Roger, but they were saddened when their oldest, Bobby Ray died of a heart attack while in his 30s. Then he lost his dear wife to a heart attack in 1977, later remarried to Mary Jo Sewell, and lived until 1991, age 87.
