Vernie Adeline Phillips was born 22 April 1897 in Barber, Logan, Arkansas, USA. She was 3rd of the nine children born to Henry Anderson Phillips (1868-1938) and Margrett Ann [Howard] Phillips (1876-1917). Siblings: Epsie [Phillips] Blanton (1891-1961), Jerry Thomas Phillips (1894-1963), Gustie Guy Phillips (1900-1966), Evelyn Ann [Phillips] Ayers (1903-1960), George Harvey Phillips (1905-1987), Limuel Buel Phillips (1908-1966), Paul Anderson Phillips (1912-1964) and Hattie Irene [Phillips] Miller (1916-1983). She married John Larkin Compton (1881-1971) on 2 December 1915 in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma. They were the parents of six sons: Dale Altus Compton (1917-1992), Charles Franklin Compton (1919-1992), Louis Leon Compton (1922-2016), Gustie Milton Compton (1924-2002), Jerry Buel Compton (1928-1995) and John Thaddus Compton (1933-1940). Vernie was a beautiful singer and she had a nice alto voice. She passed away 20 January 1976 in Visalia, Tulare, California and she was laid to rest in the Visalia Public Cemetery in Visalia, Tulare, California. The following is a memory shard by her grandson (John L. Compton). Vernie Compton lived in Ivanhoe, California. I stayed at grandma's house one summer. She was well loved by everyone in the community and at her church. She made quilts for family members. The bathroom for the house was outside in the washroom. Out there grandma kept the canning jars. I loved her chow chow. She had a grape arbor out back and grew the best Concord grapes, which she made into juice and jelly. I was at sea on the USS Lewis & Clark unaware of her death .
