Bio

Hattie Irene Phillips was born 6 September 1916 in Wanette, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of the 9 children born to Henry Anderson Phillips (1868-1938) and Margrett Ann [Howard] Phillips (1876-1917). Siblings: Epsie [Phillips] Blanton (1891-1961), Jerry Thomas Phillips (1894-1963), Vernie Adeline [Phillips] Compton (1897-1976), Gustie Guy Phillips (1900-1966), Evelyn Ann [Phillips] Ayer (1903-1959), George Harvey Phillips (1905-1987), Limuel Buel Phillips (1908-1966) and Paul Anderson Phillips (1912-1964). Her mother died of a massive heart attack when Hattie was only 8 months old. After her mother's death, the family tried to sustain the baby with milk from the cow. Hattie was not thriving and in fact she was going downhill and struggling to stay alive. It was discovered that she was allergic to cow's milk. Her oldest sister, Epsie had given birth to her own daughter, Nadine shortly after Hattie was born so Epsie took Hattie into her home and nursed and cared for her alongside of her own baby. By so doing, she saved Hattie's life. Epsie and her husband Thaddeus Pearl Blanton continued to love Hattie and raise her in their home. Hattie referred to her oldest sister as "mama" and Mr. Blanton as "papa." She was treated in Mr. Blanton's will with the same status as a daughter. She married C. C. Hughes on 18 August 1938 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri but their marriage ended in divorce in 1965. They were the parents of 4 children, Thaddeus Eugene Hughes, Charles Clayton Hughes, Richard Stanley Hughes and Rhonda Coleen Hughes. Hattie also raised her neice, Marsha. Hattie later was married to Lynn G. Miller in Maryland. Hattie was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away 20 January 1983 while staying with family in Mercer Island, King County, Washington. She was 66 years of age. Her body was brought back to her home in Maryland and she was laid to rest in the Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, Maryland on 1 February 1983.
