Bio

Miriam was born to Hester Elizabeth Kelsey Cooper and John Robert Beauregard Cooper in Marshall County, Mississippi, at the family home built by her great-grandfather, Austin Elvy Moore. She had two older half-siblings, three older siblings, and two siblings. The Cooper family was exceptional for the times, with the girls all attending college. Miriam graduated from Mississippi Synodical College. Prior to her father's death, he told her mother to move the family to Texas, where he believed they would have better opportunities. After his death, they moved to Lubbock, Texas. Miriam taught school there, and met her husband, Gordon Wight Parkhill. They married and raised three children. She loved her children! Their house was the gathering place for all of their teenage friends. Miriam was known for her exceptional command of English grammar, and readily provided correction to family members. She tutored her future son-in-law, Billy D Smith, enabling him to finally pass freshman English at Texas Tech. Miriam was a fun person who loved to talk, and never met a stranger. Sadly, Gordon divorced her after 30+ years of marriage. It devastated her, and I believe she never stopped loving him. (On his deathbed, Gordon confided to their daughter, Ruth, that he wished he had been a better man and should have stayed married to Miriam.) Miriam remained in Lubbock for the rest of her life, where her sister, Sara Ruth Cooper Lowrey, and youngest child, Miriam Jean Parkhill Waller, also lived. Sunday dinners with the Waller family were routine. She loved her grandchildren, and always had a roll of cherry Lifesavers in her pocket to share with their dog, Boots. In the end, Alzheimer's Disease took it's tragic toll. Miriam was released from her suffering in 1983, where she was surely greeted into Heaven with the open arms of her savior.
