Gordon was a professor of Engineering at Texas Tech University when it began. He helped design the original Tech football stadium. He was a founding partner for the engineering firm, Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper in Lubbock, Texas. He predominantly designed sanitation systems. He served as an Army engineer in the Philippines during WWII. Gordon later worked in El Paso. He was married to his first wife, Miriam Moore Cooper, for thirty-four years. They raised three children, Ruth Harwood, Gordon Wight Jr., and Miriam Jean. Gordon was married three more times, first to Dorothy Thompson, then Sylvia Baker, and finally Noriko Yasue, whom he met on his world travels.
