The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, May 22, 1947; pg. 1 SON OF MR. AND MRS. F.J. OSTDIEK KILLED AT BENKLEMAN Relatives and friends here received word Sunday evening of the death of Raymond Ostdiek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Ostdiek of Benkleman (sic) who was struck by lightning about 2:30 on that afternoon. Noticing a few clouds coming up that looked like a windstorm, he had gone to close a windmill in a pasture a short distance from the house and returning home when hit by lightning. His folks saw him fall and immediately rushed him to a doctor who worked for several hours in an effort to revive him. Raymond was born at Indianola, Nebr. and would have been 16 years old in October. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Walter of Bird City, Kan., Louis and J. D. at home and six sisters: Loraine of McCook, Mrs. Alphonse Reining and Mrs. Orville Johnson, Benkleman (sic), Mrs. Paul O'Leary of Anton, Colo. and Kathleen and Yvonne at home. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at Benkleman (sic) with Msgr. Hellman of Lincoln offering the High Mass of Requien (sic). Rev. Frank Sherman directed the choir and delivered the sermon. Interment was made at the Catholic cemetery at Benkleman (sic) beside the grave of his brother, Alvin who was killed five years ago. Pall bearers were three pals of the deceased from Benkleman (sic) and three cousins: Richard Hoelting and Vincent Ostdiek of Lawrence and Jimmy Kohmetscher, McCook. Relatives from Lawrence who attended the funeral included: Mrs. Wm. Hoelting, Francis and Richard, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ostdiek and Vincent, Clarence Ostdiek, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schroer, Ernest Ostdiek, Richard Rempe, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Ostdiek, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Buescher, and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Buescher.
