Red Willow County Reporter (Indianola, NE), Thursday, May 14, 1942; pg. 1 Alvin Ostdiek Is Killed Monday Alvin Ostdiek, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Ostdiek, of Benkelman, and until last year, of Indianola, was killed Monday morning when he entered a trench which he had been digging between two irrigation wells, after his shovels, the trench caving in and smothering him to death. Services were conducted at the Catholic Church, of which he was a member, in Benkelman, Father Kohler officiating. Burial was in the Benkelman Cemetery. He is survived by ten brothers and sisters, besides his parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins of Lawrence, Nebr., Cambridge, Indianola, and McCook. Had he have lived, he would have been 21 May 12, the day following his accident. Alvin was well known here, and was visiting friends and relatives here only the day before.
