Bio

** James Henry Kemp was the 8th child born to William and Elizabeth (Finch) Kemp. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. James was corporal in Co. K, 27th Indiana Infantry volunteers. Two of his younger brothers, Benjamin and Dave, were members of the same company. James was killed in action at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Many of the soldiers who died at Chancellorsville were buried in a mass grave after the battle was over; this is probably why there is no record of a grave for James at Chancellorsville. James was 23 years old when he died; he was one of five brothers who fought in the civil war. ** based on notes received from Dan Kemp The Fredericksburg National Cemetery : In July 1865, three months after the restoration of peace between the states, Congress authorized the establishment of a National Cemetery in Fredericksburg to honor the Federal soldiers who died on the battlefields or from disease in camp. The cemetery contains the graves of over 15,000 United States soldiers. Most of them are Union soldiers who died in the battles and camps around Fredericksburg. Over 80% of the soldiers are unknown
