They were married in Hardin County, KY on March 27, 1823. Sam C. Kemp, William's older brother, was present at the marriage and gave his oath that both William and Elizabeth were of lawful age. According to family legend, the Finch family came to the United States from Ireland. The women of the family were noted for their beautiful auburn hair and many of Elizabeth's descendants have auburn hair to this day. The Finch Family first appeared in Hardin County on the 1810 census: Nat. Finch, Head of household 1 male of 26 under 25 2 males of 10 under 16 3 females under 10 1 female 10 under 16 We know from family records that the 4 girls in the family were: Elizabeth, Eve, Anna, and Belle. We don't know the names of the two boys or why there was no female listed who would have been the mother of the family. In 1840 William moved the family to Dubois County, Indiana and settled on a tract of land just south of where the old Cooper Schoolhouse once stood. **notes from Dan Kemp
