Bio

Mrs. Marguerite E. Smith, 73, of 4630 Wornall Road, died on May 24, 1966 at St. Mary's Hospital. A rosary recitation was held at 8 p.m. wednesday. Prayers were at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at Newcomer's Mass; 9:00am Thursday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic church, 39th Terrace and Washington, and 2:30 pm at the graveside at Mt. Hope cemetery, independence, Kansas. Arrangements were by D.W. Newcomer's Sons, Paseo at Brush Creek. Marguerite Elizabeth Fitzgibbon was born on November 24, 1892 in Kansas City, Missouri, to John C. Fitzgibbon and Anna Catherine Hergenroder. The family raised three sons and two daughters. John owned and managed a Hotel and Saloon in Kansas City, Missouri. The family later moved to a farm in Desoto, Johnson County, Kansas for ten years. Her parents then purchased the well-known Dr. Belt Farm near Parsons and Oswego, Kansas. Marguerite lived and taught school in Oswego, Kansas, for a few years, but lived in Kansas City, Mo. for most of her life. She was an exceptional seamstress and tailor and designed and sewed clothing for her family and relatives. Marguerite married Earl Jasper Lesslie and two children were born of this union. She was later married to Mr. Smith who died shortly after they were married. Marguerite was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic church. She is survived by two sons, Mark E. Lesslie, 5921 West Seventy-sixth Terrace, and Donald J. Lesslie, Hutchinson, Kansas; two brothers, Joseph Edmond Fitzgibbon, British Columbia, and Thomas Frederick Fitzgibbon, Costa mesa, California; and eight grandchildren. Please note: Edmond Firzgibbon, the brother of John C. Fitzgibbon and uncle of Marguerite Elizabeth Fitzgibbon, is buried in the family plot of John C. Fitzgibbon at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. The 1887 death certificate states his name is Edward. His headstone has his legal name which was Edmond.
