John C. Fitzgibbon was born in Limerick, Ireland on July 7, 1848 and was Baptized in Hospital Parrish, Limerick, Ireland, Diocese of Emly and Cashel, Ireland on July 10, 1847. His parents were Edmund Fitzgibbon and Bridgett Kenefick (Kennefeak) ). John and his mother arrived in the United States in 1852. His father had left Ireland at an earlier date. By 1856, his family was together and living in Litchfield, Connecticut. His siblings. Ellen, William, Michael, Edward and Thomas were born in Connecticut. A sister Kate was born in Wisconsin in 1866. At the age of 15, John C. left home to work for Joseph Cassidy in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut. While there, he attempted to join the Union Army but Cassidy and his father put a stop to it due to his young age. Shortly thereafter, at the age of 17, he made his way to Ohio. He enlisted in the Union Army, Co F. 193rd Regiment of the Ohio Infantry on March 11,1865, under the alias, John Kenefeak, his mother's maiden name. On March 13, nine hundred and seventy Union soldiers mustered into the Army under Colonel Eugene Powell. On march 20, the infantry was ordered to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia and assigned to the 2nd Brigade 1st Provisional Division Army of Shenandoah. Two weeks after leaving Ohio, he wrote to his father. He left his Bounty of $300 for his father to pick up in Ohio. His father traveled to Ohio to receive the bounty and shortly thereafter, moved his family to Seneca, Wisconsin. John C. mustered out of the Army on August 4, 1865, when the soldiers were taken back to Columbus, Ohio. John immediately traveled to his family's new home in Seneca, Wisconsin. The next few years he spent his time in territories west of the Missouri River; Wisconsin, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. He participated in several cattle drives from Texas, served as a civilian Indian Scout, and was a teamster for a mine in Colorado. John was known for being an excellent equestrian, and an excellent marksman. By 1880, John and brother William Joseph were in Kansas City, Missouri, as proprietors of the Eldorado Hotel and Saloon located in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, Missouri. On September 6, 1881, John married Anna Catherine Hergenroder, who had moved from Nebraska to help manage his hotel. They were married by Father Dalton at Annunciation Catholic Church in Kansas city, Missouri. John and Anna had six children of which five survived. After many prosperous years in the Hotel and Real Estate business in the Kansas City, Missouri area, the family bought a farm in Johnson County, Kansas which they farmed for more than ten years. The entire family was well known for their good character, kindness and generosity towards others. They were devout Catholics and devoted to family. In 1911 they purchased the well-known Dr. Belt Farm in Labette, County, located near Parsons and Oswego, Kansas. John Fitzgibbon died of a heart attack on February 22, 1914. His burial took place on February 25th at the Fitzgibbon Family plot, Mount St, Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. His brother Edward, and their son, Francis who died shortly after birth are buried in the family plot. Their youngest son, Tom and daughter Marguerite still lived in the home at the time of his death. In 1917, the 160 acre farm was sold. Anna Catherine moved into Oswego, Kansas where she and her family enjoyed a wide circle of friends. Anna Catherine died in 1942 and was buried beside her husband at Mount St, Mary's Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. See photos and click for more information.
