Bio

Anna Catherine Hergenroder Fitzgibbon passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Fitzgibbon Lesslie in Independence, Missouri, on Wednesday, July 9, 1942. Anna Catherine Hergenroder was born in 1860 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois to Martinus and Anna Plagge(Plage) Hergenroder. Her father immigrated from Germany in 1855 and her mother in 1856. They were married in Adams County, Illinois. she was born as Catherina Josephina. Her family moved to Nebraska to homestead a farm when she was eleven years of age. At the age of 21, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to manage the El Dorado Hotel, owned by John C. Fitzgibbon. They married in 1881 and had 6 children, five living to adulthood. After twenty prosperous years in the Hotel & Real Estate business in the Kansas City, Missouri area, the family bought a farm in Johnson County, Kansas where they farmed and raised horses for ten years. In 1911 they purchased the well known Dr. Belt Farm in Labette, County, not far from Parsons and Oswego, Kansas. John Fitzgibbon died of a heart attack in 1914. In 1917, Anna Catherine sold the farm and moved into Oswego. Her youngest son, Tom and daughter Marguerite lived in the home. Marguerite was a school teacher. Anna Catherine remained in Oswego for almost twenty five years where she enjoyed a wide circle of friends. Due to health reasons in January of 1942, she moved to the home of her daughter Marguerite Fitzgibbon Lesslie in Independence, Missouri. She died on July 8, 1942. A Rosary was said at 8:30 that evening. She laid in state at the home until the funeral at 9:00am the following morning. The Catholic Funeral service was officiated by Father McKernon of Oswego. Paul Bearers were Dan O'Connell, W. A. Lawellin, Harold Hendley, Leo Galvin, Walter Holmes and C C. Harland. Her body was laid to rest next to her husband in the Fitzgibbon Family Plot at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. She was survived by her daughter, Marguerite, (Mrs. Earl) Lesslie, sons Joseph Fitzgibbon of Alberta, Canada, John W. Fitzgibbon, Kansas City, Missouri, Tom Fitzgibbon of Los Angeles, California, a brother Frederick Hergenroder of Snyder, Nebraska, five grandsons, three great granddaughters, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Clarence, son Francis, who died shortly after birth in 1886, and her daughter Anna Marie Fitzgibbon Houston in 1937. Note: Edward Fitzgibbon, the brother of John C. Fitzgibbon is buried in the family plot at Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. He had been shot and killed at the El Dorado Hotel Salloon where he was employed by the owner, John C. Fitzgibbon Sibling not yet linked ? Katie Hergenroder, b. 1868 ?
