Bio

Services Saturday for retired businessman Services for W.J. Chrismer, 78, were held Saturday, March 12, at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tom Westfall officiating. Burial was in the Yuma Cemetery. He died Wednesday evening at the Yuma Community Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident February 10, 1974. Wilbur Johnston Chrismer was born April 27, 1895, to pioneer parents, Charles C. and Jennie J. Chrismer. He was reared near Yuma and educated in Yuma and Brush schools. Subsequently, he worked as a cowboy on ranches in Montana, Oregon, Wyoming and Texas. In 1916, he enlisted in the second Idaho Cavalry at Pendleton, Oregon. His company was attached to the Fourth Regiment of the United States Cavalry in the punitive expedition against Pancho Viva in Mexico. After six months service, he was honorably discharged at Nogales, Arizona. In 1917, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in France with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Bill, as he was familiarly known, took an active part in civic affairs, serving on the town board, Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in political affairs, having served as a Republican committeeman and candidate for political office. He was an enthusiastic member and contributor of the Yuma County Historical Society. He was engaged for many years in farming and stock raising. He supported and participated in the promotion of area fairs and rodeos and encouraged the development of rodeo as a sport. In later years, he was an ardent supporter of all other types of local athletics. His wife preceded him in death in 1965. His survivors include his children, Jane and Mervin Hale of Newark, Ohio, Jean and Bernard Balderston of Yuma, William J. and Carmen of Brush, ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Other survivors are Harold and Helen Chrismer, Rex Chrismer, Juanita Chrismer, Margaret and L.H.
