Bio

Sturgis --- Mass of Christian burial for Henry J. Karrels, 71, is scheduled Monday 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Vallo will officiate with the Rev. Gilbert Stack assisting. Burial will be in the St. Aloysius Cemetery under the direction of the F. O. Jolley Funeral Home. A Christian wake service is scheduled Sunday 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Karrels was born Nov. 9, 1905, at Sturgis to Henry and Margaret Karrels. He attended Sturgis schools, and farmed and ranched in Bear Butte Valley the remainder of his life. He married Helen M. Garr Jan. 14, 1948, in Sturgis. He was a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and Deadwood Lodge 508 BPO Elks. He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include his widow, Helen; a son; a daughter; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Pierce, Rapid City; and two grandchildren. A memorial has been established to the Sturgis-Meade County Ambulance Service for coronary care equipment. --- From The Rapid City Journal - April 2, 1977
