CIERLEY, OCTAVIA ELSIE --- Graveside services will be held Friday, June 4 at 2:30 P.M. at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd. for OCTAVIA ELSIE CIERLEY, 98. The Rev. Bud Frye will conduct the service. Born in Indian Territory on March 31, 1884. Elsie moved to Texas in a covered wagon when she was 6 years old. She then moved to California in 1916 and had resided in Kern County for 27 years. In her former years she was known as TAVY SHELLEY. Elsie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Before retiring, Elsie was a professional cook in resort areas, such as Bass Lake, Lake Tahoe, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake and the most famous of all Hawaii. She had gone to Hawaii in 1941 and her intended stay was short lived with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On that Sunday morning, December 7th, she could remember the black smoke that filled the sky. Her son, Ray, said, "Oh Mom, they are just target practicing." Elsie was soon to lose that son, Ray Andrew Cierley to World War II. Another son, James Carter Cierley and his daughter, Frances Joann Mason preceded her in death. Survivors include son, Grady Hill Cierley of Georgetown; daughter, Ruby Jewell Eldridge of Bakersfield; daughter-in-law, Ruth "Bettie" Cierley of Modesto; sister, Irma Jewell Parks of Los Banos; ten grandchildren, Barbara Caniglia, Bill and Spencer Cierley, Mickey Rodkey, Nancy Machado, Royce Jerrald and Jackie Wilson, Randy Cierley, Janice White and Wayne Cierley, 33 great grandchildren and 16 great great grandchildren.
