Fort Bend Herald, May 31, 2003 Lawrence H. "Pete" Wieghat, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and loyal friend to so many, went to his eternal reward on March 7, 2003 at his home with his family by his side, after a very long and courageous battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and numerous other cancers. Family will be receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday March 11, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Home in Needville. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, with Rev. Fred Banda officiating and being assisted by Rev. George Kuebler and Father James Ramsey. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Pete was born on Nov. 17, 1930 in Rosenberg to Willie H. and Martha Tielke Wieghat. He was preceded in death by his parents; a special nephew, Wade Allison Keeton; and brothers-in-law, John D. Barnes and Wes Bishop. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Dorothy Novosad Wieghat; four devoted sons, Rodney and wife, Darlene, Tim and his wife, Jennifer, Carlton and his wife, Chriss, and Scott and his wife, Tammy; seven priceless grandsons, Rhett, Reed, Chance, Cord, Tyler, Tanner, and Kane Wieghat; two precious granddaughters, Cierra and Kyla Wieghat; four sisters, Rosa Lee Barnes and special friend, Eddie Kaminski, of Rosenberg, Lillie Bishop of Newport News, Va., Benita Walzel and husband, Gilbert, of Needville, Leona Griffith and husband, Orval, of Huntsville, Ala.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends are left to mourn his passing. Pallbearers will be his sons, Rodney, Tim, Carlton, and Scott Wieghat, with all of his grandchildren serving as honorary pallbearers, along with members of American Legion Post No. 350. Pete, a lifelong resident of Needville, was a man of integrity who loved and protected his family and community with pride. He was a man of principles and high morals believing in the well being of all people, especially the youth, whom he represented in the many organizations in which he was active in his early years. He was a member and past president of American Legion Post No. 350 in Needville; the Needville Volunteer Fire Dept.; charter member of the Needville Live Oak Club; the Blue Jay Quarterback Club, a.k.a. the Blue Jay Booster Club; member and past president for two separate terms of the Needville Consolidated Youth Fair (chosen along with his wife as the 1999 Youth Fair Honorees); past member of the Needville ISD school board; life honorary chapter farmer of the Needville FFA; member of Sons of Herman and Woodmen of the World. Due to declining health since 1979, he was unable to continue his involvement in his community and in the organizations he so strongly believed in. Pete served in the U.S. Army Korean Conflict form 1953-1955. He worked for Dow Chemical Co. in Freeport for 40 years, retiring in 1991 due to rapid declining health.
