John E. Robinson was the son of Richard Robinson and Elizabeth McRorey, who were both natives of North Carolina. John Robinson's parents were married March 16, 1836, in Pope County, Illinois. John's mother was a young widow when his father married her. Elizabeth's first marriage was to James Thompson on June 22, 1826, in Pope County, Illinois. John Ervin Robinson had four sisters and one brother: 1. Margaret Robinson born October 16, 1837, in Pope County, Illinois. She married Pleasant M. Scott on Oct. 30, 1853, in Pope County, Illinois. 2. Sarah E. Robinson born February 14, 1839, in Pope County, Illinois. She married William T. Water on December 21, 1856, in Massac County, Illinois. 3. Mary Ellen Robinson born March 25, 1842, in Pope County, Illinois, and she died on May 9, 1898, in Somervell County, Texas. She married Noah West. 4. Ann Eliza Robinson born January 3, 1844, in Pope County, Illinois, and she died January 2, 1904, in Bosque County, Texas. She married William Jasper Morris on January 7, 1864, in Massac County, Illinois. 5. James Monroe Robinson born March 3, 1848, in Pope County, Illinois, and he died January 26, 1931, in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. James Robinson married Martha Emily "Mattie" Clark on November 6, 1877, in Chambers County, Texas. On August 4, 1862, as the War Between the States was raging, John Ervin Robinson and his brother, James Monroe Robinson, enlisted as privates in the Illinois Infantry. John was 14 and James was 16 years of age when they left home for the army, but they lied about their ages by saying they were 18 and 19 years old. The brothers were mustered into Company H of the 131st Regiment of the Illinois Infantry. On October 19, 1863, they were mustered into Company C of the 131st Regiment. The Robinson brothers participated in the Battle of Vicksburg which began May 18, 1863 and ended July 4, 1863. John Robinson and his older brother, James, were both mustered out of the army in Hempstead, Texas, on November 6, 1865. It is believed that their parents had both died so that is why James and John Robinson did not return to Illinois. The Robinson brothers eventually made their way to Chambers County, Texas. The 1870 federal census, dated July 14, 1870, shows James and John Robinson working as farm laborers in Chambers County, and they were living next door to the William Henry Cooper Family. John Ervin Robinson began to court the oldest Cooper daughter, Mary Jane. John Robinson married Mary Jane Cooper in 1870/1871 in Chambers County, Texas. The Chambers County Courthouse burned in 1875 so their marriage license is lost forever. The 1880 federal census shows John and Mary Jane Robinson as residents of Chambers County. John Robinson's age is given as 33 years and his occupation is shown as being a farmer. Mary Jane's age is shown as 28 years and her occupation is shown as keeping house. Their children are shown as Elizabeth (age 8 years), Richard, age 6 years), Mary Jane (age 4 years) and Luther (age 1 year). Another daughter, Laura Ellen, was born in 1881 and daughter, Annie, was born in 1885. Mary Jane Cooper Robinson died in childbirth following Annie's birth in July 1885. John Robinson married Emma Eaton on March 25, 1891, in Chambers County. Emma also died in childbirth. The 1900 federal census shows John Robinson living in the home of his older brother, James M. Robinson and family, in Precinct Four of Chambers County. Afterwards, John Robinson moved to Central Texas to the areas of Johnson, Somervell, and Bosque Counties. John Robinson got a job as a mailman on a rural delivery. He used a pack mule to deliver the mail. John married a young widow, Jenny Baker Matthews, on Aug. 6, 1902, in Glen Rose, Texas. John Robinson moved his family to Dayton, in Liberty County, Texas, around 1918, where he died in 1927. John was buried beside his first wife in the Stubbs Cemetery. Today, the graves are unmarked. ***************************************************************************** OBITUARY FROM THE DAYTONITE: PASSING OF J. E. ROBINSON J. E. Robinson, whose death was mentioned in these columns last week was born in Polk (sic) County, Illinois. At the age of 16 he joined the army and continued in it until the close of the Civil War in 1865. Shortly after the close of the war he moved to Texas and spent most of his life in Liberty county. Several months previous to his death, he wrote out instructions for his funeral, which were carried out as far as possible. He requested that the 23rd and 24th Psalms be read and that "Jesus, Lover of my Soul" be sung. Rev. Jim Williams conducted funeral services and the body was laid to rest beside his first wife who preceded him 41 years and 11 months. There was a large crowd at the Cove cemetery to attend the funeral and to pay the last tributes of love and respect to the deceased. J. E. Robinson is survived by one brother, who resides at Cleburne, Texas, a wife, and nine children, twenty-nine grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. All the above children attended the funeral.
