Bio

John Kojetin was born in about 1859, in Czechoslovakia, to Vaclav (Wencel) and Anna Macholda Kojetin. In July 1865, Vaclav, Anna, and John arrived in America. Sadly, John’s twin sisters, who were born on the ship during the trip to America, died and were buried at sea. The Kojetin family made their first home in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. John’s brother, Wencel John Kojetin, was born in Chicago. A few years later, they left Chicago, and settled on a farm in Scott County, Minnesota, where John’s brother, Frank Kojetin, and his sister, Mary Ann “Maria” Kojetin, were born. In 1878, the Kojetin family sold their farm in Scott County and moved to Beaver Falls Township in Renville County, Minnesota, where John helped his parents build a sod house and farm the land. On 19 April 1882, John married Mary Skoblik, the daughter of Martin and Eva Mazna Skoblik, in the original church in Bechyn, Minnesota. Mary was born on 10 May 1863 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. John and Mary moved to Missouri for a few years; then, returned to the Bechyn area where they purchased a farm. They lived and farmed in the Bechyn area until 1910, when they moved to Montana. Their five children, Walter Martin, John Emanuel, Matthew Charles, Helen Eva, and Stephen Albert, were all born in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota. John Kojetin died at the age of 84, on 21 March 1944, in Lewistown, Fergus County, Montana. John was survived by his wife; four children, Walter of Great Falls, Stephen of Lewistown, Helen (Joe) Barta of Danvers, and Adela (Charles) DeMars of Coffee Creek; nine grandchildren; and, seven great-grandchildren. After a funeral mass at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, John was buried in Danvers Cemetery in Danvers, Fergus County, Montana.
