Alfons L. Hudec son of Josef J. and Emelie Hudec.Alfons L. Hudec married Annie Matzke on November 18,1940. __________________ Alfons Hudec Killed in Hunt Accident Death came tragically and suddenly last Sunday evening to Alfons Hudec,51-year-old farmer and life-long resident of this area,in a deer hunting accident on the Adolph Hudec farm in the Osage section. Mr.Hudec,an experienced hunter, was climbing down from a tree stand, elated over the fact that his 14-year-old,son,Alphonse Jr.,had just shot his first buck, when in some manner his .303-caliber rifle discharged, killing him instantly. The accident occurred between 5:30 and 6 p.m. The son related the events to the coroner,Justice of the Peace H.W. Hasse. He and his father were hunting from the same tree. His father fired once at a deer, missing. Then the son fired several times and hit it.Mr.Hudec started down the tree while Alphonse Jr. continued to watch the fallen deer.Mr.Hudec's rifle discharged, and he fell about five feet to the ground. He was dead when his son reached his side. Shot in Chest The slug from the powerful British-made rifle, according to the physician who examined Mr.Hudec, entered the left chest and shattered, part of it continuing through the body and emerging below the left hip. There were powder burns on the chest.Probably in his excitement the victim had neglected to return the rifle to the safety position after firing.Making his way down the tree,he may have laid the rifle on a limb and then reached back up for it. Judge Hasse, called from La Grange where he was visiting relatives, reached the scene at 7:30 p.m. and returned a verdict of accidental gunshot death self-inflicted. Born on Same Farm Mr.Hudec and his family live in the Wildwood section, but it was on this Osage farm, now owned by his brother, that he was born July 29,1908.He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.Joe J. Hudec.A lifetime resident of the Osage-Wildwood section,he was the husband of the former Miss Annie Matzke, whom he married Nov.18,1940.He was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Society. Funeral services were held at Hubbard Funeral Home and St. Michael's Church. The Rt.Rev.Msgr.A.F. Drozd and the Revs.Thomas Flanagan and Thomas O'Callaghan officiated. Pallbearers were H. Ed Rabel,Bill Hudec,Edwin Kainer,Steve Rabel,Albin Rerich and Bill Hoffmann. (condensed) Weimar Mercury,December 4,1959
