Bio

When James Joseph Cantrell was born on 11 June 1877, in Kentucky, his father, Benjamin Tolbert Cantrell, was 21 and his mother, Margaret Poor-Cantrell, was 19. In 1882, his family moved to Winfield, Kansas, possibly to claim land in the new community of only 2,000 people. In 1887, the family of 4 moved to Larned, Kansas where his father operated a home goods business. In 1897, the family moved back to Winfield, Kansas. Still having relatives and interests in Kentucky, at the age of 32, Joseph met and married Alena Frances Mays on 13 January 1909, in Green, Kentucky. They were the parents of 1 son, Alva Mays Cantrell born in 1912 in Winfield. James Joseph died on 21 May 1955, in Winfield, at the age of 77, and was buried in Highland Cemetery.
