The Winfield, Ks. Daily Free Press Wednesday, February 16, 1916, Page 1 One Of Cowley's Pioneers Dead Benjamin Tolbert Cantrell Died Early This Morning After a Long Illness. Benjamin Cantrell, one of Cowley's pioneers, died this morning at his home on South Manning, after a lingering illness. Mr. Cantrell has been a resident of Cowley County for the past thirty years and for a number of years resided on his farm southwest of Winfield. He was sixty years of age at the time of his death. Besides his widow, Margaret Cantrell, he leaves nine sons; Anthony, Joseph, Forest, William, Luther, Clay, Turley and Robert, all of whom reside in Cowley County and Charley Cantrell of Independence, Kansas. One brother of Louisville, Kentucky, survives him. No Funeral arrangements have yet been made, awaiting the arrival of the brother. The Winfield, Ks. Daily Free Press Tuesday, February 22, 1916, Page 4 Benjamin Tolbert Cantrell was born in Greene County, Kentucky, December 27, 1855, and died February 16, 1916. Deceased was married to Margaret Calwell Poor at the home of the bride's father in Greene County, KY., October 4, 1873. To this union 11 children were born, one son and one daughter dying in infancy; eight sons reside in Winfield, and one son in Independence, Kan. He came to Kansas in October 1882 and resided on a farm six and one-half miles west of Winfield for four years. He moved his family to Larned, Kansas to open a home goods store. After eleven years, then moved his family back to Winfield in the spring of 1898 where he resided until the time of his death. He united with the Baptist church at an early age in life and remained a devout Christian throughout his life. Besides the family, he leaves one sister, two brothers and many friends to mourn his departure. The remains were laid to rest in Highland cemetery Saturday, February 19, to await resurrection Morn.
