Bio

~~~~~~~~~~ Newspaper clipping - source unknown, but probably: THE REGISTER-GUARD Eugene, Lane Co., OR—_____ September 1948 OLDEST CITY EMPLOYE STUCK TO HARD WORK FOR 34 YEARS Death closed the career of Eugene's oldest city employe last Friday [September 10], but 83-year-old John F. Alford was actively on the job until the day before. Ordinarily, he would have been retired on Jan. 1, 1948, when provisions of the state public employes' retirement act went into force. But Alford, who had worked in the city maintenance department for 34 years, was not willing to quit. Furthermore, he knew virtually everything about Eugene's streets, sewers and other public facilities. In excellent health, his actual age surprised virtually everyone in city hall when it came to light during preparations for the retirement act. He applied for a year's reinstatement after his legal retirement and won his point. Maintenance Superintendent "Slim" Mullins says Alford's work after Jan. 1 further proved his ability to stay at work…. Alford was a native Oregonian, born of pioneer parents at Harrisburg in 1865. He married Lillie Belle Perkins, who survives, at Lancaster, March 16, 1892. Also surviving are six children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His funeral service will be Tuesday at Poole-Larsen Mortuary at 10 a.m. He will be buried in Alford cemetery which was named for his family at Harrisburg. ~~~~~~~~~~
