REGISTER-GUARD, Eugene, Lane Co. Oregon, Tuesday, May 19, 1987 Bessie B. Hatfield Matson of Eugene died May 17, 1987 at the age of 88. She was born in Monroe, Oregon on August 12, 1898, coming from pioneer great grandparents arriving in Oregon in 1850 and settling near Harrisburg. Granddaughter of Russell and Martha Rogers Alford and Alvin and Lucy Richardson Perkins; great-granddaughter of Thomas and Kesia Capp Alford and Perry and Mary Richardson; daughter of John and Lillie Perkins Alford. Her father, John Alford, worked for the City of Eugene for 34 years before his death in 1948. Bessie was a cook in Eugene, first at the old Public Market on West Broadway, then for the McMorran Washburn Tea Room, where she made those famous pies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hatfield, and her second husband, Chris Madson(sic). She is survived by 2 daughters: Mrs. Les (Lucille) Omlid and Mrs. Wallace (Lorraine) Gilzow; a sister, Doris Tribble of Hayward, California and 2 brothers, Ivan Alford of Eugene, and Clell, and wife Velma Alford, of Portland; a step-son, Glenn, and wife Bettie Matson, of Eugene; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 29th, at 1 p.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park. Pastor Dan Quelio officiating. Lounsbury-Musgrove Mortuary in charge of arrangements. ------------------------------- NOTE: Obit states that she was a great-granddaughter of Perry and Mary Richardson. This is incorrect -- it should be Perry and Juliatha Richardson. Juliatha's maiden name was Cox.
