I cannot say, and I will not say that she is dead - she is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, She has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since she lingers there. And you - O you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and glad return, Think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of her still as the same, I say: She is not dead - she is just away!!! Opal Rebecca Holbrook Masterson, R.N., age 79, of Halls, walked into the light and her Savior's waiting arms on January 7, 2010. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip McKinley and Maude Melissa Holbrook of Dwina, VA; siblings: Orpha Holbrook , Ruth Pennington (Herbert, Junior, Kenny and Eddie Lee), Edgar Holbrook (Dorthy Overton-Gary Lynn, Phoebe Holbrook Lowery , Amy Beth), Flora Jordan (James Cecil Jordan-James jr, Terry, David, Anita, Rita), Noah Holbrook ; (Anna 1st-Nedlan Glenna 2nd-Susan & Eva Martha 3rd); husband, William S. Masterson ; son, Forrest Wayne Masterson ; great granddaughter, Kayla Marie Bryant ; nieces, Becky and Phoebe. Opal was a graduate of St. Paul High School in St. Paul, VA. Following high school, she attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Johnson City, TN and began her career as a Registered Nurse. Opal was a teacher, a director of nurses and a home visiting nurse; retiring from Your Home Visiting Nurse Service. Her greatest accomplishment was that of being our mother. Wearing the many hats of motherhood, Opal was a caregiver, comforter, peacemaker, homeroom mother and scout leader. Opal was the beloved mother of Debby Bryant, Brenda (Rick) Byers and Forrest, grandmother of Nick Bryant and Chris Byers; great grandmother of Colin Bryant; sister of Wilburn Holbrook and Samantha Holbrook( Becky Bush ), and favored aunt of all her nieces and nephews. She also leaves her very special dogs, Jackson and Charlie. As anyone who knew Opal would tell you, she loved life and people. She lived life to the fullest in every way and never met a stranger. Most of all, she loved her family – often taking care of family members and friends in need. She missed the marriage of grandson Chris to his girlfriend, Amber. They gave the family 2 beautiful little girls that would have been the light of her life. The greatest gift Opal has given all of us is her love and devotion. When we reflect on Opal's life, these thoughts come to mind: "Well Done My Good And Faithful Servant." "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can."
