Published in the Athens Review October 18, 1934 W.C. (Charley) Gauntt, 67, widely known and respected citizen of Henderson county, who spent his life in his home county, died Wednesday morning at 7:10 o'clock at his home on North Pinkerton street. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis several days ago. Mr. Gauntt retired from the mercantile business here a month ago to devote his time to his wife who has been seriously ill for some time. Funeral services will be held on Thurs. afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the family residence. The deceased had been a member of the First Baptist church for many years. Born and reared three miles South-east of the New York community settlement, the deceased was a member of one of Henderson county's pioneer families, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. James C. Gauntt. He was born February 19th, 1867. On December 14th, 1887 he was married to Miss Lula Splawn, who survives him. He moved to Athens in 1894 and for a number of years was employed by the late Ed Carroll in the hardware business here. He later entered business on his own account. "It is impossible to praise this man too much, for he was truly a good man", B.C. Hall, his lifelong friend said Weds. morning. "He was indeed one of Henderson county's best beloved and most respected citizens". In addition to his wife he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Jim Bob Gauntt-LaRue; Mrs. H.J. (Mary) Dingler-Terrell; Mrs. R.J. (Texana) Baker-Athens; Mrs. George (Adeline) McCarley-LaRue; Mrs. Joe (Jeffie) Young-LaRue; Mrs. M.M. (Daisy) Dingler-LaRue; Leroy Gauntt-Hubbard City and Mrs. Will (Sibbie) Vandiver-Lindale. Pallbearers will be Jim Bob Gauntt, Tobe Gauntt, Douglas Gauntt, Broughton Gauntt, Bob Gauntt and Paul Gauntt.
