Published in the Athens Review December 31, 1936 Mrs. Lula Gauntt, 67, widow of the late W.C. (Charley) Gauntt, and a lifelong resident of Henderson county was buried Sunday afternoon at the Athens cemetery. Rev. M.L. Fuller was in charge. Her death occurred Saturday morning at 7:10 o'clock at the home, 611 North Pinkerton, following a long illness. She had been an invalid for the past two years. Her husband, for many years a merchant of Athens, died on October 17, 1934. The deceased, the former Miss Lula Splawn, was a native of Henderson county, having been born at Old New York on March 2, 1869. She was the daughter of H.S. Splawn who came to Texas from South Carolina. She was reared in the New York community, coming to Athens thirty-five years ago with her husband. She had been a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist church for more than half a century. She and Mr. Gauntt were married December 14, 1887. "I have known the late Mrs. Gauntt all of her life and no better citizen ever lived in Henderson county", B.C. Hall of Athens said in paying tribute to the memory of the deceased. Only one close survivor, a brother, Mr. Newt A. Splawn of Frederick, Oklahoma; lost only child, a son, at birth, but had endeared herself to many young folks as "Aunt Lula" and has "raised" several young people who have lived with her for several years at a time. Her loving kindness has reached a large circle of relatives, friends and neighbors. Pallbearers: Mr. Tobe Gauntt, Mr. Bert Gauntt, Mr. B.C. Dingler, Mr. Charles Baker, Mr. Horton Young and Mr. Tom Baker.
