Eddie E. Walla Dies of Heart Attack on Sat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eddie E. Walla, 49, a resident of West for the past 47 years, died of a heart attack at 4:10 p.m. Saturday. The attack occurred at the Pioneer Gin, where Mr. Walla had gone to purchase cotton. Death was instant. Funeral services were held at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the Catholic Church, Rev. E.J. Polcak and Rev. George Doskocil officiating. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Plsek, Joe F. Holasek, Cliff Stanphill, George Kacir, W.H. Townley, and Edward Deiterman. Honorary pallbearers were members of the West Fire Department, the Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge and the West American Legion Post. Born in Colorado County, deceased came to West when he was two years of age and had resided here since that time. After graduating from local schools he served in the army for a short while during World War I. Later he entered the cotton ginning business in West and was engaged in this business until about three years ago when he first suffered from a heart ailment. Although in ill health for the past three years, he continued to be active in the business and civic life of West, operating an insurance business and cotton purchasing office here, and at the same time serving as vice president of the West Chamber of Commerce and of the West Fair and Rodeo Association. He was affiliated with practically every civic organization in West and worked untiringly for the development of the town and community. He was a charter member of the local Knights of Columbus Council, a member of the West Fire Department, the American Legion, SPJST and other organizations. In recent years, Mr. Walla had been the outstanding worker in activities of the West Fair and Rodeo Association and the West Chamber of Commerce. In spite of his serious ailment, he continued his work in these organizations until the time of his death. During World War II, Mr. Walla served as an officer in the Texas State Guard for a period of four years. In addition to this war-time service, he was local Red Cross chairman and secretary of War Bond campaigns. Many who have been residents of West for long periods have declared that E. E. Walla contributed more to his town, fellowman, and community than any citizen in the history of West. The large number attending the funeral service, and the huge floral offerings indicated the esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew him. Survivors include his widow; his mother, Mrs. Johanna Walla, both of West, seven brothers, Adolph and Joe of West, Albin of Dallas, John, Roman, Frank and Willie of south Texas; four sisters, Mrs. Frances Sulak of Laredo, Miss Annie Walla of Smithville, Mrs. Mary Bucek of San Antonio, and Mrs. Julie Jurica of Flatonia.
