Johnnie J. Uptmore, age 80 of West, died Sunday evening, August 24, 1997 at his residence. Rosary was recited August 26 at 7 p.m. in the St, Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated August 27 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West, with full military honors conducted by West V.F.W. Post No. 4819. Mr. Uptmore was born June 6, 1917 in Tours and lived in the Tours-West area all of his life. He was a car salesman at Adams Chevrolet and Uptmore Motors for a number of years and was also employed at Jerrel Bolton Chevrolet for the last few years. Mr. Uptmore was a veteran of World War II, serving as Sergeant in the 142nd Infantry Co. E and a member of the 36th Division. Johnnie Uptmore held the Good Conduct Medal, Africa Defense Ribbon, the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantry Badge and on his E.T.O. Ribbon there are four battle stars--Salerno, Anzio, Southern France and Rhineland. Johnnie was overseas about 27 months. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 4819, the American Legion and Military Order of the Purple Heart No. 476, also the D.A.V. of Whitney. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, West Longhorn Club, West Fair & Rodeo Association, S.P.J.S.T. No. 54 and Cottonwood R.V.O.S. Lodge. He married Elnora Snapka on April 6, 1974 in West. Survivors include his wife, Elnora of West; one son, Johnnie Ray Uptmore of Hewitt; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Linda) Sharp of Penelope; and Mrs. Larry (Karen) Nolan of Arlington; three stepsons, Robert Wilde of Edmond, Oklahoma, Ed Wilde of Sugarland, and Rick Wilde of Spring; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Daniel (Judy) Svrcek of Llano, Jeanette Barton of Spring and Doris Brennan of Temple; one brother, Virgil Uptmore of Waco; four sisters, Mrs. Rudy (Ernestine) Kaluza, Mrs. Frank (Ruby) Vrba and Mrs. Jimmy (Minnie) Black, all of Waco and Mrs. Sam (Josephine) Curry of Dallas; two grandchildren, one great-grandson; 16 step-grandchildren and 20 step great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Johnnie Ray Uptmore, Michael Sharp, Robert Wilde, Ed Wilde, Rick Wilde and Michael Brennan. Honorary pallbearers were the coffee group of Ole Czech Bakery and members of the West V.F.W. Post No. 4819. Kotch Funeral Home of West was in charge of arrangements.
