Mr. Ernest A. (Big Ern) Uptmore, 85, of West, died Monday, December 8, 2003 at a Houston hospital. He was born December 27, 1917, in Tours, son of Frank and Sophie Seith Uptmore, and had lived in the Tours and West areas all of his life. He was in the 36th Division in World War II, making invasions at Salerno, Anzio and Southern France. After the war, he established Uptmore Motors in 1946 in West, and it continues today. He attended the 36th Division reunion held every year on Labor Day weekend, of which he was a charter member. He married Lucille Kubacak January 14, 1951 in Waco. He was voted outstanding Texas Dealer in 1982 by the Texas Independent Dealers Association. Through the years he was a member of St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption, Knights of Columbus Council #2305 and Monsignor George Doskocil 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council #2391, West Chamber of Commerce, a life member of VFW Post #4819, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, West Fair and Rodeo Association and West Longhorn Club. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Ernest (Inky) Uptmore and wife, Debbie, and Gary Uptmore and wife, Laura, all of West; one daughter, Debbie Uptmore of Austin; two sisters, Hattie Mynar of West and Adeline Finn of Bellmead; and five grandchildren. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 11, at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, December 12, at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption with Rev. Ed. Karasek and Rev. Isidore Rozycki as celebrants.
