Mrs. Mary Tobola, Pioneer West Citizen, Claimed By Death Mrs. Mary Tobola, a pioneer citizen of this section of the state, died at the home of her son, Joe Tobola on Saturday, June 24th. She was 78 years and one day of age when death came. Mrs. Tobola was a native of Czechoslovakia, being born there on June 23, 1855. At the age of 18, in 1873, she came with her parents to this country, settling in South Texas. In 1893 she moved to Penelope, where she resided until 1907, when the family moved to this community. She lived a consistent life, rearing a family of nine children before her husband died several years ago. She had been in ill health for several years, and was in a serious condition during the few weeks preceding her death. Funeral services were held from the Joe Tobola residence at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25th, and from the Church of the Assumption at 4:00. Rev. Ed. J. Polcak had charge of the services. Interment was at the Catholic Cemetery. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Mary Brezik of Penelope, Mrs. Frances Blahuta of Penelope, Mrs. Sophia Richter of Flatonia, Mrs. Julia Kameny of Penelope, and Mrs. Betty Holasek of Corpus Christi; four sons, Will of West, Emil of Penelope, and Joe and Jim of West. The many friends of Mrs. Tobola and her family sympathize with them in their great loss. Her death will leave an empty spot in the lives of many. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 44.
