Sudden Death Of F.J. Popp Shock to Many West Friends As this paper goes to press, news is received of the sudden death of Mr. F.J. Popp. He died about 5 o'clock while on his way home from Waco, where he had gone earlier in the day for medical attention. He had been suffering some time with high blood pressure and the visit to Waco was for the purpose of having an X-Ray made. He complained of feeling weak just before he died, this being the only warning the members of the family in the car with him had, before death came. The death came as a shock to the many friends in West where he has spent his life. He was engaged in the grocery business here, being a member of the grocery firm of Popp Brothers. Deceased is survived by the wife and four daughters and three sons, Joe Popp, of the National Bank of West, Bennie and Ernest, Mrs. Elo Zatopek, Mrs. Alfons Schroeder, Ruddie and Millie Popp; two brothers, Adolph Popp, Abbott; John Popp, West, and three sisters, Mrs. Chas. Cernech, Mrs. Aug. Peters and Mrs. J.C. Karlik. Popp, whose death occurred April 10, was held last Saturday morning, April 12, at 9:30 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rev. Father Joseph Pelnar and Rev. Father Polcak officiating. Interment followed at the Catholic Cemetery, with the following active pallbearers: Joe Urbanovsky, Paul Skrabanek, F.F. Lednicky, Joe Urbish, Tom Motis and Rudolph Nemecek. Hundreds of friends and acquaintances attended the funeral and interment, the church being crowded, and the funeral procession one of the longest ever seen in West. The floral offerings were many, attesting something of the esteem in which this pioneer West citizen was held. A Requiem Mass was held, Father Pelnar officiating. This was followed by funeral discourse by Father Pelnar in which he spoke of life, the trials and vicissitudes, of the various vocations in which mortal man finds life and service. He spoke in conclusion of the close of life, and in this connection, of the life of the deceased. Father Polcak spoke also of life, and gave in this connection the story of the first parents who brought death upon the world by their disobedience. He fittingly outlined the plan of salvation, and spoke of the estimable Christian life of the departed one whose body rested near the chancel rail in front of the altar, in the church where he had been faithful in his duties. Both funeral sermons, one in Bohemian and the other in English, were beautiful in truth and containment, teaching as they did on life and the Divine plan of salvation. With the closing of the service, the prayers for the repose of the soul of the dead were said, and the choir sang the beautiful hymn, God Be With You Til We Meet Again. Surviving are the widow, and seven children, four daughters, Mrs. Elo Zatopek, Mrs. Alphons Schroeder, Misses Rudie and Millie Popp, three sons, Joe Popp, Bennie and Ernest Popp, two brothers, Adolph Popp, Abbott, and John Popp, West; three sisters, Mrs. Chas Cernoch, Mrs. August Peters, and Mrs. J.C. Karlik. Deceased was born May 1, 1879, died April 19, 1930. he had been in business in West for a number of years. For many years he had been in the grocery business, associated with his brother, John Popp, under the firm name of Popp Brothers Grocery store. He was recognized in business and in his home and church life for his honest and zealous character. There was no one to say aught against him, and his friends were numbered by those who knew him.
