Bio

Mary L. Marek, age 79, of West, passed away early Saturday morning, May 23, 2009 at West Rest Haven. A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Marek was born on March 30, 1930 in West, the daughter of Ludvik and Mary C. (Matus) Gerik. She attended school near the Cottonwood area. On June 29, 1948, she was united in marriage to Raymond Joseph Marek Sr. in West. She worked for several years at an Elementary and High School Cafeteria in San Antonio cooking for the students. She was a homemaker and loved gardening, painting, her animals, and traveling especially on the cruise ships. Mary and her husband helped with the Boy Scout activities for many years in San Antonio and West area. She was instrumental in helping Raymond to map out the St. Mary's Cemetery. Mary was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She was also a member of the McLennan/Hill Czech Heritage Society, S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #6 of Cottonwood and R.V.O.S. #46. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Anne Marek, who died December 1, 1997; and two sisters, Christine Soukup and Violet Parma. Survivors include one son, Raymond J. Marek Jr. and wife Delta Lynn of Spring; two brothers, Lawrence Gerik and wife Linda of Springfield, West Virginia and Alfons Gerik and wife Doris of Elm Mott; two sisters, Ruth Dudik of Gerald and Leona Whiteley and husband Jack of Grandbury; two granddaughters, Kimberly Thompson and Somer Couzens; five great-grandchildren, John and Hailey Lark and Billy, Ethan and Brandon Couzens; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
