Bio

Explosion Takes Life Saturday Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs. Marie Macik, 68, who died at her home in Birome Saturday afternoon. Rosary services were recited at 8 p.m. Sunday night at the Connally Funeral Home in West. Funeral services were held Monday at 8 a.m. at Connally Chapel in West and the Penelope Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Konkiel officiated. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mrs. Macik burned to death at Birome Saturday afternoon when an oil cook stove exploded and destroyed part of her home. It is two miles north of the Birome community. She was a resident of that area for the past 18 years. Mr. Buren Christian of Birome and Alva Walker, a neighbor discovered the blaze and reported that Mrs. Macik was dead when they found her badly burned body beside a doorway leading to an outside screened porch. Apparently she had attempted to escape from the fire but was overcome by the flames and smoke. Neighbors reported that she probably had been baking bread when the stove exploded. A loaf of bread was found crisply burned in the oven. Survivors are three daughters; Miss Frances Macik of Penelope, Mrs. Frank Dobecka of Grapevine, and Mrs. Henry Sykora of West; five sons, Louis and Henry Macik of Penelope, Frank Macik of Red Springs, Albin Macik of West and Stanley Macik of Lancaster; and eighteen grandchildren. Pallbearers were Frank Lucien, Rudolph Jaska, Charles Dolezal, Fred Dulock, Pete Sykora, and John Dobecka. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 62, No. 9, Edition 1, Friday, July 13, 1951, page 1.
