Bio

Adolph H. Gerik, age 86 of West, passed away Monday evening, November 22, 1999 at his residence. Rosary was recited 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 a.m., with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Gerik was born October 8, 1913 near West and had lived in the West area all of his life. Mr. Gerik was a well known musician, accordion player and leader of the OK Band in the early 1930's till the late 1960's, performing at wedding dances and clubs around the West and Waco area. Though the Gerik Band has long been disbanded, the memory of their music still lives in the minds of the people who heard them perform. He was owner of the Capital Service Station in West for a number of years and worked as a mechanic for Scott Chevrolet in West until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, the K.J.T. Society #31 and West Longhorn Club and Rodeo Association. Mr. Gerik married Carolyn Hutyra, October 10, 1939 at West. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, four brothers, six sisters, his daughter, Barbara Cannon on October 13, 1996 and his son, Ronald Gerik, on May 26, 1998. Mr. Gerik is survived by his wife, Carolyn of West; two sons, Tommy Gerik and his wife, Sarah and David Gerik, all of West; one son-in-law, Robert Cannon of China Springs; one sister, Margaret Scott of West; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 24 nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Darrell Gerik, Brian Gerik, Ricky Gerik, Ernie Gerik, Keith Gerik and Robert Cannon, Jr. Mr. Gerik laid in state, at the funeral home, from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
