Emma Kucera, 86, passed away Monday, May 22, 1989 at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Rosary services will be at 9:40 Thursday morning at the church with the funeral services at 10:00. Mrs. Kucera was born November 13, 1902 at Lawrence and was a lifetime resident of this area. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. William (LaVeta) Mazour of Lawrence, two stepsons Ted Kucera of Red Cloud and Edward Kucera of Scappoose Oregon; two step-daughters Rose Aksamit of Beatrice, Mrs. James (Marian) Hope of Aurora, Colo.; one sister Mary Landon of Hastings, one brother Joseph Petr of Pueblo, Colo., 21 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, May 25, 1989; pg. 1 ========== Emma IPetr, Hajny) Kucera was born November 13, 1902 to Frank and Anna (Byer) Petr of Lawrence, Nebraska. After attending rural and parochial Sacred Heart school, she graduated from the 8th grade and did sewing for different ones, until she was employed at MaCauley's Grocery Store in Lawrence. On November 20, 1923 she was united in marriage to Emil Hajny, at Sacred Heart church in Lawrence. They lived Southwest to Fairfield. To this union one daughter, La Veta was born. On October 25, 1928 Emil passed away suddenly from effects of Meningitis. Six months later, Emma and Le Veta moved to Lawrence, where Emma boarded high school students for a few years. She then went back to clerk for Wallace MaCauley at the grocery store. In May 1937, she married John Kucera at Assumption church in Deweese, NE. In 1960 they sold their farm and moved into Lawrence in a new home they built. Emma was a member of the Altar Society and Quilting Circle where she became head of the circle till she had to start spending more time at home, because of John's health. She kept quilting for a past time and quilted many quilts for friends and relatives. John passed away from a lingering illness March 27, 1978. On February 1989 she became ill and was hospitalized two weeks and because of failing health she was admitted to Bethesda Home at Blue Hill, NE. On May 6 she was again admitted to the Mary Lanning hospital (sic) where she passed away May 22, 1989. Funeral services were held on May 25 at Sacred Heart Church with burial at the church grave yard. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Anna Petr, husbands, Emil Hajny and John Kucera, sister Christina Hajny and stepdaughters Evelyn Phelps and Louise Kucera. The family she leaves to mourn her passing is her daughter, LaVeta and husband Bill Mazour; step-sons Ted Kucera and Ed Kucera and wife Mary; step-daughters Rose Aksamit, Marion Hope and husband Jim Hope; brother Joe Petr and sister Mary Landon; 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, nieces nephews and many friends.
