Maria "Mary" Wimmer was born in Peigen, Bavaria, Germany at eight o'clock in the evening on Saturday, September 8, 1877. She was the second of ten children born to Johann and Theres (Moosburger) Wimmer. Her older sibling at the time of her birth was Theresa Wimmer, who was 11 months old. Shortly after Mary was born the Wimmer family moved from Peigne to Dingolfing, Bavaria, where Mary's next three siblings, Frances Mary, John George and Joseph Henry, were born. In 1884, Johann Wimmer made the decision to go to America ahead of his family to find work and a place to live. In 1885, after Johann Wimmer had secured a home and money to pay for his family's passage, he sent for them. Theresa and the children traveled in steerage class. They arrived at the port of Galveston on October 31, 1885. The Wimmer family made their home in St. Martinsville (later renamed Tours), Texas, a predominately German community. After settling in St. Martinsville (Tours), Mary Wimmer and her siblings all attended school held in the John Henry Schroeder home. The first schoolhouse was not built until 1890. Until then, regular classes were held in the Schroeder home. On November 9, 1898, John Theodore Berger and Mary Wimmer were united in holy matrimony at St. Martin's Catholic Church. Rev. Christopher Preker, pastor of St. Martin's, performed the ceremony. John was 23 and Mary was 21. John and Mary (Wimmer) Berger had eight children, including one, Heinrich Albert, who passed away at age of ten months in 1905. Only three of their children remained in Tours. Mary lived the remainder of her life in Tours. Mary died at home in Tours, Texas at 8:05 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 1936, at the age of 58 yrs 4 mos 3 days. Her cause of death was listed on the death certificate as Cardiac Embolus (Heart Failure or Stroke) with Arteriosclerosis (commonly called hardening of the arteries) as contributory. Mary's funeral took place on January 13, 1936 at St. Martin's Catholic Church. Kyle Aderhold with Aderhold Funeral Home in West handled the arrangements. Her prayer card was printed by Subiaco College Press, Subiaco, Arkansas, where her son, Robert John Berger was a seminarian. He was ordained a priest, Rev. Mark Berger, five months after Mary's death, in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 6, 1936. Mary and John Berger's youngest child, Emma, was only eighteen at the time of her mother's death. Emma was not yet married and still lived at home. She took over the household duties and looked after her father until his death six years later in 1942.
