John T. Berger, 67, a resident of the Tours community for many years, passed away at his home at 3 o'clock Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Martin's Catholic church in Tours, Father Mark Berger, son of the deceased, officiating, burial in St. Martin's cemetery, Tours. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Angelina Vohl of Tours, Mrs. Agnes Girard of Houston, and Miss Emma Berger of Tours; four sons, I.F. of West, William of Tours, Alphonse of Massey, and Mark of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was 9 years old when he and his family came to America. John was a blacksmith and he made some of the steel crosses (grave markers) at St. Martin's Cemetery, in his blacksmith shop. John's son, Isidor, remembers seeing his Dad make the wroth iron scroll work decorations. The blacksmith shop was on the Albert Deiterman place, however, the first Berger smith shop was in the original log church building which was across the street from the Berger homeplace. (1885-1938) John T. Berger sold out the blacksmith shop to John Zahirniak about 4 years before his death. At some point in time the blacksmith shop was moved to Leroy and it was still standing as of September, 2013. John Theodore played the french horn in the Concordia Band of Tours. He was a member of the St. Martin Men's Society in Tours, Texas. St. Martin Men's Society was founded in 1898. John registered for the WW I draft on September 12, 1918. His occupation was self employed blacksmith. Married, wife Mary. Address - McLennan County, Precinct 3; Route #2, Box 52, West, Texas. They lived in Tours, Texas but mail went through West.
