Bio

Rev Mark Robert Berger, O.S.B. The Rev. Mark R. Berger, Order of St. Benedict, resident chaplain at Spohn Hospital, died at 6:30 a.m. today (August 6, 1968) after a short illness. Born at Tours, Texas, the Rev. Berger, 58, entered the New Subiaco Abbey Seminary in Subiaco, Arkansas in 1924. He was ordained a priest in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 6, 1936. While at Subiaco, Berger served on the academy faculty as a teacher of German. He was later appointed assistant pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Worth and taught at Laneri High School there. He was transferred in 1939 to St. Boniface Church in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and became its pastor in 1943. He left St. Boniface in 1945 to become the pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Paris, Arkansas, where he remained for 10 years. In 1955 Berger was reassigned to Laneri High School where he stayed two years, until his appointment at Spohn Hospital in 1957. Berger was born March 4, 1909, the fifth of seven children of John Theodore and Mary (Wimmer) Berger. Rev. Mark R. Berger's given/baptismal name was Robert John Berger. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Emma Housewright and Mrs. Angeline Vohl, both of Tours, and Mrs. Agnes Girard of Baytown, and a brother, Isidor Berger of Waco. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Spohn Hospital Chapel, and at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Corpus Christi Abbey, 1200 Lantana. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa's Church. It will be con-celebrated by monks of the Corpus Christi Abbey. Burial will be in the abbey's section of Rose Hill Memorial Park under direction of Maxwell P. Dunne funeral Service. Rev. Mark Berger was disinterred on August 1, 1985 and reinterred at Corpus Christi Abbey Mausoleum in Sandia, Texas. In July of 2002 the Corpus Christi Abbey and Benedictine Retreat Center in Sandia, Texas was closed due to the deaths of many of the aging community of monks along with the desire of many of the younger monks to follow other paths. The small number of monks remaining were no longer able to gather enough money to continue operation of the facilities. In 2003 the abbey site was sold to a group of Coptic Orthodox Christian monks. In March, 2005 it was transformed into St. Mary & St. Moses Abbey Monastery of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. The Benedictines found it necessary to relocate the remains of their departed brothers from the Corpus Christi Abbey cemetery to another permanent and consecrated local cemetery. They had been trying to get the move accomplished for two years when the pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in San Patricio, along with Joan Bluntzer, a lifetime member of the parish, appealed to the San Patricio parish council to take the matter under consideration. The council agreed to accept the remains at no charge and provide a final resting place for the men who had contributed so much to the area through years of work as priests, teachers, and mentors. Dobie Funeral Home in Mathis supervised the move, which was finally completed in 2005. Rev. Mark Robert Berger, O.S.B. is now interred at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery, located behind St. Patrick's Church, 20742 Magnolia Street, San Patricio, San Patricio County, Texas. I am leaving the memorial in Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery for any researcher who does not know the above travels of Father Mark after his death, so they might find him where he now rests. I have also created this memorial for Father Mark at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery. Researched and Compiled by Andrea (Berger) Walston 22 Oct 2009
