Bio

On November 29, 1909, Eva Stella Baker, gave birth to twin boys in Smith Center, Kansas, Ralph & Roy. The boys were close throughout life. Roy grew up in Kansas. Roy played semi-pro baseball for teams throughout the Midwest. Roy married Margaret Brandfas on May 12, 1933, in Reamsville, Kansas. Trying to make ends meet at the height of the Great Depression was difficult. He worked for local farmers making 50 cents a day plus room and board. In 1934, Roy & Margaret and their infant son, Richard moved to Emmitt, Idaho, where he worked in the cherry and apple orchards. In 1935, Roy and Margaret moved to Scott's Mills, Oregon, Roy worked in the logging industry. He worked for small logging companies, cutting monstrous Douglas firs and other evergreens. While living in Scotts Mills, Roy and Margaret had three more sons, Dale, Virgil and Joe. Roy and his family followed work around the Pacific Northwest. The family moved several times in the span of 12 years, having 3 girls to add to their four sons, Eva, Lois and Faye, finally establishing roots in Yelm, Washington, in 1947. He started working for Weyerhaeuser in 1947, after 24 years as a faller at the company he retired in 1972. After retiring from that post, he served as a night watchman at Weyerhaeuser's Vail camp. In the 1950's he coached a Yelm town baseball team. As well as other playing teams from the surrounding towns. Roy loved farming, gardening, outdoors, fishing, hunting and go camping. Later in years, he loved trips to Reno, Bingo and watching the Mariners. He enjoyed time with his 24 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren, three of which preceded him in death.
