Bio

Melvin F. Baker, 93, of Buena Vista died on November 11, 2016 at his home. He was born on September 9, 1923 in Thornsburg, Kansas to Wright W. Baker and Clara (Deichen) Baker. Mel attended Martin Center School in Smith Center, KS and high school in Downs, KS. He milked 5-10 cows twice per day and they farmed with horses. He joined the Army in 1950 and for 3 years he was stationed in Fort Riley, KS and Fort Richardson in Alaska. He attained the rank of Corporal. In 1951 he married Lula May Corbett in Osborne, KS. Ten children were born from their union: Wayne (Jo Ann) Baker, Carolyn (Chuck) Larimore, Linda (Ken) Washburn, David (Joan) Baker, Judith (Doug) Barro-Johnson, Daniel Baker, James (Astor) Baker, Timothy (Lori) Baker, and Stephen (Brianne) Baker. Mel worked on bridge and road construction in Kansas until he moved to Colorado in 1958 to work at Climax Mine. He was employed there for 29 years, working in several departments. He was a volunteer fireman in Buena Vista for 7 years. After retirement he worked for Merrifield Greenhouses. He married Roberta Brown of Silt, CO on Valentine’s Day 2001 in Loveland, CO. Melvin loved gardening and keeping a nice lawn. He was a member of the BV Garden Club, the American Legion, and was a member of Mountain Heights Baptist Church. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Nettie Bloomer, Belle Hunt, Edna Badders, and Fern Adams; brothers Ray, Frank, Ralph, Roy, and John Baker and Walter Fuller; sons Daniel and Stephen Baker; daughter Martha Billis-Baker; and grandson Marshall Billis. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; children Wayne (Jo Ann), Carolyn (Chuck), Linda (Ken), David (Joan), Judith (Doug), James (Astor), and Timothy (Lori); 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A viewing is scheduled for Friday, November 18, 2016 from 2-4 PM at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, 203 East Sackett Avenue, Salida, CO. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Mountain Heights Baptist Church in Buena Vista. Melvin has chosen cremation and will be interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista at a later date. Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home of Salida.
