John D. Baker, 88, Beatrice, formerly of Wymore, died Wednesday, September 14, 2005, at the Parkview Center in Beatrice. He was born August 31, 1917, in Smith County, Kansas. When he was 10 months, his mother died, and he was raised by an aunt and spent his childhood in several different places in Kansas. He married Lola Buck on Oct. 8, 1940, in Seward, NE. They spent most of their married life in Wymore before moving to Beatrice in 2000. John was a soil mover for the Soil Conservation Service and later owned the Phillips 66 station in Wymore, which included a car wash. He was responsible for doing most of the dirt work for the construction of the Wymore Church of Christ at its present location and was a Green Thumb worker for the Wymore Southern School District for five years following his retirement. He was a member of the Wymore Church of Christ, served as a deacon for the church and was a member of the Christian Builders Sunday School class. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 531 at Beatrice. His hobbies included woodworking, especially building grandfather clocks, fixing almost anything that was broken or not working correctly and spending 18 winters in the Harlingen, Texas, area. Survivors include his wife, Lola; daughter Carol (Clay) Scott of Beatrice; grandchildren Kelle Scott of Omaha and Jeff (Bonnie) Scott of Lincoln; one great-granddaughter; half-brother Melvin (Roberta) Baker of Buena Vista; and half-sister Fern Adams of Kearney, NE, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wright and Eva (Nichols) Baker; four brothers and three sisters.
