Bio

End of an Era is a published story, I have permission to share it. R T Wood (the author) is now deceased. The story was also published in the Shamrock Newspaper. It will be ok to use, do please give him credit. The parents of Mary Jane Newman, father, Joseph Austin Newman was a son of Joseph & Rachel Rabb Newman, settlers with Austin's original 300 in Texas, 1824. J. A. was born in Austin's Colony, Wharton County, and mother, Elizabeth Dedrick Baker, second wife of Joseph Austin Newman, daughter of William Baker and Vashiti White. The following story of Mary Jane Newman and William Henry Wood are excerpts from "End of An Era" written by R. T. Wood, son of Roy & Gracie Jones Wood, grandson of William & Molly Wood. Mary Jane Newman was born in Cuero, Texas in DeWitt County on August 16, 1861. She was raised on a farm and did her share of the work. When still quite young, she became interested in a cowboy from one of the large ranches in the area. One day, he came riding through the field where she was plowing with a walking plow (commonly called a "Georgia Stock"). "Molly," he said, "I'll do your plowing if you will do my cooking." She was willing, but thought she was to young and should wait a year or two. However, he was persistent and keep setting the date nearer and nearer. On October 26, 1876, they were married. She was fifteen years old. Their first baby (a boy) was born the following year, but apparently all was not well. The doctor told her she could never have another child and live. However, the stork was most persistent and visited the house 17 times, once with a set of twins!. So by that time, she had concluded that doctors are not always correct and turned to God for strength during the many trials that were to follow. Our last joyful visit was in the fall of 1956. We discussed her long eventful life, and of course I had to ask her about her large family, of which she was so justifiably proud." I gave birth to 17 children," she said, "I have 79 grandchildren, I can count 203 great grandchildren and 141 great grandchildren, bringing the total to 424 descendants and all these from a living grandmother!" Incidentally, when we were visiting, I asked her how old she was and she replied "Come next August, I will be 96." Then, pausing for a moment, she added, "Uncle Billy and I, lived together for 60 years, fought many battles together and received many blessing." R. T. Wood William & Molly are buried in Dozier Cemetery, close to Wellington, Texas in Collingsworth County. William passed from this life December 11, 1936, and Molly, March 7, 1957.
