Bio

Herman Gerhardt Lehman, Sr. was the only child born to Maria Paulo b 13 Jan 1854, Spremberg, Sachsen, Germany and Johnathan Carl August Lehman b 08 Sep 1843 in Gross, Saubernitz, Niederschlesische Oberlausitz Kreis, Sachsen, Germany. His father immigrated in 1859 aboard the Iris with his family and his mother arrived in 1869 aboard the Galveston. His parents settled in Giddings, Texas. Herman was born 24 May 1879 in Paige, Bastrop County, Texas. In July 1909, he married Annie Marie Muesse, daughter of Mary Angela Krupa b 1870 d 1961 and Robert Muesse b 09 Nov 1869 d Aug 1889, when he died Annie Marie was just 1 year old. They made their home in Paige, Bastrop County, Texas. To this union 5 children were born: - Gertrude b 1911 d 15 Jan 1998 was married to Fred Lude, no children were born to this union. - Herman Gerhard, Jr. b 1913; he married Edna Ella Selke and they had 3 sons. - Adolph William, Sr. b 01 Aug 1915 d 14 Nov 1974 in Colorado, he was married to Julia Elizabeth Austin, b 15 May 1918 d 13 Mar 1997 in Colorado, to this union 2 sons and a daughter were born. - Elfrieda May b 27 Dec 1918, married John Byron Porter b 27 Aug 1919 d 30 Jul 2001 in austin, Travis County, Texas; to this union a son and daughter were born. - Son, stillborn 22 Apr 1921. As a young man Herman worked in the Lee County Courthouse and soon began his banking career with a job at the First National Bank in Giddings, Texas. Soon after his marriage they moved to Coupland to accept a position in a private bank and helped organize the Coupland State Bank. In 1915 he moved his family back to Giddings where he opened a private business then he again went to work for the First National Bank; in 1918 he worked as cashier of the Guaranty State Bank of Paige, later named president and served in that capacity until 1946 when the bank closed. At that time he returned to the First National Bank as vice president until his health forced his retirement in 1957. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Austin to live with their daughter Gertrude and her husband Fred Lude where he resided until his death. Survivors include his wife, Annie, two sons, Herman Gerhard, Jr, and Adolph William of Lubbock; two daughters, Gertrude Lehman Lude, and Elfrieda Lehman Porter and eight grandchildren. After his death on January 21, 1965, he was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery. His wife would join him about 4 years later, on 19 Jan 1969 and was buried beside her husband. They led a full life and have many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
